Welcome to Wholesale Gorilla!
Important!
Before we begin, the most important thing to know is... we're here to help! If at any time you have a question please reach out to our support team by clicking the "Help" button in the app admin. Or email us at support@wholesalegorilla.com.
If you're new to our platform, this is the place to start. To ensure you get the most out of our app's extensive features, let's begin by setting up the essentials so we can begin to understand how Wholesale Gorilla interacts with your Shopify store.
3-Step Quick Start Guide
Follow these steps to get the basics up and running:
- Step 1: Creating Wholesale Pricing Rules (5 mins)
Offering exclusive prices to certain customers is the foundation of how the app works. - Step 2: Creating wholesale customer accounts (10 mins)
Create dedicated wholesale customer accounts to identify which customers receive special pricing. - Step 3: Testing Wholesale Gorilla on your store (10 mins)
Use the test account you just created to shop your store as a wholesale customer and verify that the discounts and settings are applied correctly.
After these quick steps, you can begin to take advantage of our app's multitude of features, bringing your wholesale business to the next level.
Enabling the app embed
In order to use Wholesale Gorilla, you will need to toggle our app's embed on within your theme.
Our app's code needs to 'embed' into your theme code in order to run any functions; therefore, you must toggle our app's embed on within your live theme before you will see any wholesale features activate.
Many apps that you can add to your store need to embed into your theme code to execute. You always have control over which apps are embedded and which are not, and can make adjustments anytime via your theme settings. Shopify offers a guide on app embeds overall, which you're welcome to review here.
To Turn Our App Embed On:
- Open your 'Online Store' -> 'Theme' settings:
- Click on the 'Customize' button:
- Open the 'App Embeds' section:
- Find our app in the list; you can use the search if you don't see it right away.
- Toggle the embed so that it lights up blue; this means that the embed is now on.
- Don't forget to save your theme! This change won't take effect until you've saved your theme via the button in the top right corner:
- And that's all there is to it! The app is now active in your live theme, and is able to turn all features you've set up on for live use.
Disabling the app embed
Sometimes you'll need to toggle our app embed off (temporarily) at the request of another app attempting to do an installation, or to troubleshoot an issue to see if it happens even when our app isn't running. Aside from these special circumstances, you MUST leave the app embed turned on to use our app; if it is toggled off, the app's settings will not be running within your store until you toggle the embed back on.
- Open your 'Online Store' -> 'Theme' settings:
- Click on the 'Customize' button:
- Open the 'App Embeds' section:
- Find our app in the list; you can use the search if you don't see it right away.
- Toggle the embed off, so that it is grayed out. This means that the embed is now off.
- Don't forget to save your theme! This change won't take effect until you've saved your theme via the button in the top right corner:
- The app embed is now off. Don't forget to turn it back on when you're ready to use the app again, via the steps right above this section.
Creating wholesale pricing rules
Below are the steps to creating a wholesale price rule. If this is your first time creating a wholesale pricing rule or you are testing whether your pricing rules are still working, feel free to follow the recommendations in italics.
-
Open the Wholesale Gorilla app and click on the ‘Pricing & Discounts’ tab. Under Wholesale price rules, click 'Manage prices'.
- Select New price rule.
-
Select the pricing rule scope. The scope determines what the discount will be set upon; our app offers 3 different discount levels.
We recommend testing your first wholesale price rule on the ‘Entire Store’ level, as this will give you the quickest idea of whether the rule is working or not.
-
Next you will need to pick out a tag for the wholesale price rule. This will be the tag that you apply to any customer accounts that you wish to attach this pricing to. In this example, we have chosen the tag ‘wholesale’.
-
Next you will pick the Discount Type - Percentage based or Set Price. We recommend testing your first wholesale price rule on the ‘Set Price’ style of discount, as this will give you the quickest idea of whether the rule is working or not.
-
Your last step is to enter something into the Amount field, which will depend on which style of discount you have selected:
- If selected Percent Off, enter a numeral for the percent you wish to deduct from the retail price
- If you selected Set Price, enter the exact wholesale price of the item
In the example below, we have entered ‘$8.88’ as the new set price for our entire store:
-
Once you have completed each step of the wholesale price rule creation, click Save.
Your discount will not take effect until the same tag set in the rule is applied to a customer’s account and that customer has logged in to their account.
You can check out our guide on customer account set up for more information on this process.
Creating Wholesale Customer Accounts
There are several ways to create wholesale customer accounts. We'll list a few of them below. Choose whichever method you like, or try them all.
It's all about the Customer Tags
In order for the prices on your store to change to wholesale, or to see any wholesale functionality, a tag on the customer account must match a tag that you are using for a discount rule in Wholesale Gorilla.
Wholesale Gorilla recognizes a customer as 'wholesale' when a tag on their account matches a tag on a discount rule set in the app. A customer account can be covered in tags, but until there is a match with a discount rule tag they will be treated as a regular retail customer.
If you already have a customer account set up in your Shopify admin, use this method to convert their account to a wholesale account.
- Go to Shopify Admin and and click Customers on the left
- Click on an existing customer to access their account.
- Scroll down to the Tags section.
- Type in the customer tag (e.g. wholesale) you set up when you created a discount in the previous step.
- Click Save.
When this customer logs into your store, they will see the special price you set in the previous step.
To create a new customer account from the Shopify admin, follow these steps.
- In your Shopify admin click Customers.
- Click Add Customer.
- Enter the customer contact details.
- Add the customer tag you set for the discount rule in the previous step (e.g. wholesale).
- Save.
- Send the account invite: Next you will need to activate the customer account so you can create a password and log into your store as a b2b customer. In the upper right of the customer's profile page, click More Actions > Send account invite > and follow the on-screen instructions to send the invite email.
- Check the email address you entered for this customer, and click the link to set a password and log into your store.
Not seeing the account invitation email? We can do our best to help, however these emails are generated by Shopify. Learn more about customer accounts in Shopify.
You can also use a wholesale-specific signup page to create new customer accounts. This can be a great self-serve way for buyers to get access to your b2b prices and features.
Configure Sign Up Page
Note: For this Quick Start Guide we'll only be covering a few features of the signup form. For a complete guide on the Sign Up Page see this article.
- From the Wholesale Gorilla admin click Customers.
- Scroll down to the Customer Sign Up section.
- In the Activation Settings section, fill in the following inputs as needed (all are optional).
- Auto-tag customer: When a user signs up with this signup form this tag (or tags) will be automatically added to their account. Here you can add the tag we set in the previous step.
- Taxes: Optionally mark these customers as tax-exempt or not.
- Auto-activation: If this is checked, customers that sign up through this form will be able to shop your store as a wholesale customer immediately after signup. Keep this unchecked if you would like to review their account before granting them access to wholesale features and prices.
Create an Account with the Sign Up Page
- Scroll up to the top of the Customer Sign Up section, and click See how it looks here to open the signup form.
- Enter your information and submit the form.
- Activate the account
- If you checked Auto-activation in the step above, your customer will instantly get an email allowing them to set a password and log into your store as a wholesale customer.
- If you left Auto-activation unchecked, the store owner will get an email alerting them to a new customer signup. The store owner will then need to manually send an account invite to the customer. To send an account invite:
- From the Shopify admin click the Customers tab.
- Open the new customer account.
- Scroll down to the Tags section, and add the wholesale tag you set when you created the wholesale discount rule.
- Save
Are accounts enabled on your store?
Accounts need to be either Optional or Required for Wholesale Gorilla to work properly. Learn more here.
Troubleshooting the Sign Up Page
- An account with this email already exists: Shopify does not allow multiple customers accounts with the same email address, so if you get this error message it means you already have a customer account set up with this email address. Choose a different email address, or follow the steps in Create a wholesale account for an existing customer above.
- The Country or State/Province dropdown isn't working: Usually this means you don't have any Shipping settings configured in your Shopify admin. If this is the case, set up some retail shipping rates and the dropdowns will populate with regions you have configured shipping for.

- Are you logged in to your store with the customer account you created in step 2?
- Does the tag on your customer account match the tag on the discount rule you set in Wholesale Gorilla?
